RACE FOR STATE TREASURER: Candidates point to experience
Marshall, DeStefano exchange criticism

By Sean Whaley, Review-Journal Capital Bureau
October 28, 2006

A personal bankruptcy in 1988 and an employment history that raises some questions about the depth of his financial experience suggest that DeStefano is not the right person to serve as treasurer, Marshall said.

Marshall, who worked for the U.S. Justice Department and created the antitrust office for the Nevada attorney general's office, also points to her own employment record as a significant qualification for the job of treasurer.

Resume for treasurer: Fringe deals, bankruptcy and a suit against U.S. government
Candidate Mark DeStefano's record inspires questions

Las Vegas Sun – October 12, 2006

"Mark DeStefano, Republican candidate for state treasurer, once helped a generic drug company that made no drugs merge with a restaurant company that owned no restaurants. The new company then merged with a technology company and now trades for about a nickel a share.

"DeStefano specializes in those kinds of business maneuvers. He deals in a murky world of penny stocks, vaguely defined companies and complex financial instruments that, when combined, allow privately held companies to go public - selling stock to investors - without the heavy scrutiny of government regulators."

Candidate bounced from charity
DeStefano asked to resign board after raiding staff

Las Vegas Sun – October 10, 2006

“Mark DeStefano, Republican candidate for state treasurer, was asked to resign from the board of the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth after he poached an employee to work for his own charity, according to Kathleen Boutin, the group's founder and director.

“In an interview last week, DeStefano said Boutin had trained employee Ed Zimmerman to run DeStefano's charity. That charity, known as Future Stars of America, teaches financial literacy to at-risk teenagers.

“Boutin, a longtime member of Southern Nevada's nonprofit community, says DeStefano's claim is untrue: ‘I trained Ed Zimmerman to work for the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. I never expected a board member to steal a key employee. After that happened, we asked for Mr. DeStefano's resignation. We've had no dealing with Future Stars of America since that time. That was in May 2005.’”

POLITICAL NOTEBOOK: TREASURER HOPEFUL HAS IDEAS

Las Vegas Review-Journal – September 18, 2006

“Kate Marshall, Democratic nominee for state treasurer, has unveiled a seven-point plan she said would improve the treasurer's office.”

“Marshall said she would implement electronic money transfers, replacing the state's current method of transporting cash by armored car; try to negotiate lower service fees with credit card companies, which she said cost the state $3 million a year for the Department of Motor Vehicles alone; use online auctions to sell off the state's unclaimed property; improve the Unclaimed Properties Division's Web site, which she said is cumbersome; review all the office's contracts and agreements to see what could be done more cost effectively; and use unclaimed assets to issue bonds that would be used for academic research grants.”
